Lightning Strikes in Ottawa

June 9, 2011

It seems the same storm that led to Aaron getting stuck at the Ottawa airport most of the night in an endless series of wheelchair races, has left its effect in my backyard as well.  Here are some pics of a massive tree that fell, nicked the corner of my house and ended up in my backyard.  I think it was struck by lightning.  We had some hail as well.  With this crazy Ottawa weather, it is almost like living in Saskatchewan!

More relatives in Upstate New York

June 4, 2011

We’ve also been very fortunate to have heard from Michael Besta and his wife Valerie from upstate New York.  He sent us these photos with the following description…

My grandfather was Thomas Eric Lambert Born 1905 married to Mona Winifred. His father and mother were Thomas Henry and Bertha Gisborne. My mother is Kathleen Besta nee Lambert, her great great  grandfather was Henry Thomas Lambert who married Jane Baker.
This photo is of my parents and my Uncle Eric Lambert.  The children are, left to right, Eric, Terry, Krysia and me, in about 1960.  This one is of my mum and dad on their  wedding day in 1952.

It is great to hear from yet more cousins!

Photos of Thunder Creek Ranch

June 3, 2011

From the comment below from Catherine Fryer,

“Stampa Lambert in Saskatchewan. I have photos of Stampa, his Thunder Creek ranch and his family. At least 8 that I’ve scanned from my grandfather’s photo album. There may be more. I haven’t finished scanning it. His name was unusual and Stampa had my grandfather’s power of attorney when he was selling his land and was leaving to serve in the First WW in 1918. These photos date from 1909 to 1933. I googled Stampa Walter Lambert today and found your site.”

“These photos are in my grandfather, Frank Buscall Pearson’s, photo album.  You may have copies already.  I started scanning them a few years ago off and on, mostly off, and have thought what a wonderful sample of early Saskatchewan they are.  Lots of people, like Stampa, are named and I’d love to get photos to their descendants.  I was in Saskatchewan in May for the first time in 50 years and got the copy of grandpa’s homestead file.  I was reading it at the FHC yesterday and Stampa’s name kept coming up.  When I got home I found the photos I have of him and his family and ranch that date from 1909 to 1933.  For my grandfather to have these I would assume they were friends.  Grandpa moved to BC just before WWII in the thirties.”

We are very fortunate for her diligence, as she has sent us these wonderful photos from the past…

Christmas in Ottawa

January 2, 2011

We had a lovely dinner in Ottawa.  Captured for posterity and to encourage others to send a picture or two from their celebrations, here are some pictures of the scene pre- and post-meal.

Thanks to Cindy (in the mirror), for taking the group photos!

Merry Christmas!

December 20, 2010

I have just received a lovely email from Graham Lambert in Australia… he passes along well wishes to Gertrude (whom I will assume doesn’t frequent this website as often as Grandpa Percy did, so I will make sure to tell her directly). Graham also added the note below…

I would just like to say a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all in Canada and also the same to all the ‘new found’ relations around the world, that without Percy I would never had found.

I know the weather up there in the Northern hemisphere is pretty rough at the moment, but hopefully you all manage to enjoy the holiday season.

All the very Best,
Graham Lambert and family in Australia

Thanks Graham! Best wishes to everyone, and I will love to receive Christmas photos or notes from everyone to share a little bit of your holidays with the rest of the family, so send ‘em if you have ‘em. Merry Christmas!

Maurice (Percy) Lambert Obituary

October 14, 2010

Maurice (Percy) Lambert succumbed after a lengthy battle with cancer on October 11, 2010. He is survived by his wife Gertrude, four children, Ed (Ona) Lambert of Parkbeg, SK, Betty (Charlie) Ward of Salmon Arm, BC, Jean (George) Beck of Orleans, ON and Hazel (Mike) Williamson of Saskatoon, SK, 16 grandchildren and their spouses, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is predeceased by all of his siblings, his daughter, Edith Bernice Montgrand and his grandson Robert Ward. Percy was born in the family home eleven miles northwest of Parkbeg on May 19, 1918. In the spring of 1939, he left the family farm to find employment in Williams Lake, BC with a hard rock gold mine and later on a ranch in the Williams Lake area until Percy enlisted for active service in the R.C.A.F. It was while taking training in Moose Jaw that Percy and a young girl named Gertrude Winkler discovered they had enough in common to share the rest of their lives. They were married March 21, 1942. For the next four years, their home was wherever service postings took them. In 1946, the young couple took up mixed farming in the Parkbeg area. They raised five children that would become an important part of their lives. It was during the farm years that Percy found time to become involved in a number of public service jobs including municipal councilor, secretary of the local telephone company, and director with Saskatchewan Association of Rural Telephone companies, secretary of the local Wheat Pool, secretary of two production Co-ops, and secretary for the Zion United Church at Parkbeg. In 1975, they sold the farm and moved to a quarter-section where they raised Simmental cattle and grew flowers and fruit trees. During this time Percy worked as a Hail Adjustor throughout Saskatchewan. Percy and Gertrude enjoyed traveling and took a number of trips before settling in California for the winters to pursue the “snowbird” life style. Once fully retired and no longer traveling south, Percy learned how to use a computer and completed two full-length novels as well as several children’s books for the great-grandchildren. Besides the computer he enjoyed floor shuffleboard and is a member of the Canadian Shuffleboard Hall of Fame. He also loved bridge and cribbage, was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and life member of the Cosmo Senior Center. A Celebration of Percy’s life will be held at W.J.Jones & Son Chapel on Friday October 15, 2010 at 1:30 pm. Della Ferguson will officiate. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery. For those so wishing, memorial donations may be directed to the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, 455 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, 0S6H 1H3 or the Canadian Diabetes Association, 917 Albert St., Regina, S4R 2P6. In living memory of Percy, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W.J.Jones & Son Funeral Home.

Inside Melrose House

July 6, 2010

Some additional pictures from Mike and Hazel’s trip to show the inside of Melrose House. She noted that they stayed in the Tor Room – which is at the back of the house on the second floor.

Mike and Hazel’s Trip to Scotland

July 3, 2010

Thanks Hazel for this interesting trip report!

Since Mike was born in Scotland and had never been back since he came to Canada at the age of 4 – we thought it was high time to make a visit. We spent the first week touring the Scottish Highlands and had a grand time touring castles, museums and admiring the beautiful scenery and old buildings. We then spent a few days in Edinburgh with Mike’s cousins. We then made the trip to Glastonbury where Granny Lambert lived and stayed at the B & B Melrose House – the former Dredge home and where Stampa & Louise were married in 1906. I’m not sure how much the home has changed over the last 100 years but the front of the house doesn’t look that different from the wedding photo. The Glastonbury Tor is right behind the house, so we made that climb and were rewarded with some beautiful far reaching views of the countryside. Also, the view from the front of the house is open fields, so the house is in a beautiful setting and is extremely well maintained. Allen & Mary Cotten toured us around the area and among other things we saw thier dairy farm, the house (West Bradley) where Great Aunt Alice (Stampa’s sister) lived and the graves (West Bradley Church) of both Aunt Alice and Maud. We only had a short time there, but Allen & Mary are very excellent tour guides. I would highly recommend a vist to Melrose House and the surrounding area – lots of family history. Glastonbury is also famous for it’s annual Rock Festival (started just after we left).
